01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Taking a seat at the counter, the natural place to begin is with a tall glass of chuhai and a bowl of the house-special motsu nikomi. Tucked into a residential pocket of Kita-Koiwa in Edogawa Ward, the neighborhood izakaya Choshiya (銚子屋) serves old-school chuhai finished with a vigorous shot of soda water, yielding a crisp pour that sharpens the savory flavors of simple bar fare.
Hearty Simmered Dishes and Fresh Seafood
The motsu nikomi comes generously portioned with large cuts of offal heaped to the brim, earning praise for a clean preparation that keeps any gaminess in check. Fish options are just as prominent, with chalkboards and wall strips listing thoroughly braised akoudai (red rockfish), fresh sardine sashimi, and vinegared mackerel (shimesaba). A lineup of accessible side dishes—including tempura platters, fried horse mackerel (aji fry), and gyoza—makes it easy to mix and match bites across multiple rounds.
Unwinding with Mid-Century Charm on Weekends
The interior retains a strong mid-century Showa-era feel, centered on an aged wood-grain counter alongside raised tatami seating. Operating on Saturdays and Sundays from late morning into the evening, it provides an unpretentious setting well suited for a quiet, solitary drink. Because the tavern accepts cash only, it is best to have yen on hand before dropping by.
